Certificate Programs
Certificates are designed to recognize thematically organized learning and thereby to add value to students' traditional degrees and programs. Certificates at FHSU are considered advisory programs, designed by FHSU faculty to provide students a guide to choosing courses that introduce and develop subject knowledge and/or skills.
Certificates are typically 9-15 credit hours of coursework, but may exceed 15 hours. The coursework may be outside of a major or minor program, or the coursework may partially fulfill requirements of a major, a minor, or the General Education program. The certificate curriculum can be either within a single academic discipline or interdisciplinary.
Course credit must be earned for all courses applied to a certificate program. Specifics regarding course grade requirements, acceptance of coursework taken at other institutions (transfer), and amount of CPL credit accepted may vary. Courses taken as part of an advisory certificate are listed on the student's transcript, however the advisory certificate is not listed on the transcript. Many FHSU departments provide a completion certificate that students may use to show they completed the advised coursework and talk about what it added to their degree. Non-degree students may complete the classes outlined in an advisory certificate and receive a completion certificate if offered by the department, however they are not enrolled in a degree plan or eligible for student aid..
