Gifted Program
The required coursework for earning a Master's of Science degree in Gifted Special Education, plus endorsement, is noted below and includes:
- 36 credit hours (see Program of Study below)
- Successful completion of comprehensive portfolio
- Passing the Praxis (Gifted Education, 5358; not required for the Master's Degree but is required for the endorsement)
Most students can complete this program in 2-3 years.
We highly recommend that you only take 2 courses per semester (or less), based on your work and home obligations and needs. You must earn a C or higher for all of your coursework.

Gifted Special Education Endorsement Course Requirements (15 graduate credit hours)
- SPED 851* Theories/Models in Gifted Education (3 hours - summer)
- SPED 852* Strategies in Gifted Education (3 hours - fall)
- SPED 853* Curriculum/Instruction for Gifted Education (3 hours - spring)
- SPED 855 Identification/Assessment for Gifted Education (3 hours - summer)
- SPED 859 Practicum/Consultation & Collaboration Gifted (3 hours - fall & spring) [Prerequisites: SPED 851, SPED 852, SPED 853, SPED 855] * Requires 100 hours of practicum (including observations).
*Courses required for teaching on a waiver (provisional endorsement).
Endorsement Program Only
If you have a teaching license you can complete the endorsement program, which requires the 15 hours of coursework listed above.
Comprehensive portfolio is not required for endorsement.
This program is NOT a licensure program. If you want to teach Gifted Special Education, you will need to have a valid teaching license.
Completion of this program will grant you a full endorsement, either with or without a Master's of Science degree in Gifted Special Education for PreK through 12th grade. This full endorsement will be added to your valid teaching license.
The courses listed for this program of study cannot be used for another degree at FHSU. The time frame for completing your Master's of Science degree is eight (8) years starting with the first semester in which you enroll.
If you already have graduate credit hours that have not counted on another degree, contact your adviser to see if they will transfer.

Note. Elective options include adding an additional endorsement in High Incidence, adding a certificate/badge in Leadership in Autism, or selecting from courses across any of the AEP programs to enrich instruction for gifted students.

- SPED 801: Legal and Professional Issues in Special Education (3 hours)
- SPED 802*: Theories of Exceptionalities and Diversity (3 hours)
- SPED 805*: Assessment and Lab in Special Education (3 hours)
- SPED 852*: Strategies in Gifted Special Education (3 hours)
- SPED 859*: Consultation and Collaboration in Gifted (3 hours)
2. Then take these courses next (in any order):
- SPED 804: Behavior Management in Schools (3 hours)
- SPED 806: Methods and Materials for Exceptional Students (3 hours)
- AEP 803: Educational Research
3. And end with these courses last (in any order):
- SPED 810: Technology in Special Education (3 hours)
- SPED 811: Characteristics of Early Childhood Special Education (3 hours)
- SPED 861: Vocational and Transitional Education (3 hours)
- AEP 880: Cultural Diversity
