Master of Instructional Technology: AI Literacy for Teaching & Learning
Program Overview
The MIT program with an emphasis in AI Literacy for Teaching and Learning is designed to equip learning professionals not only to use AI in their own practice, but to understand it deeply enough to teach it to students and model it for colleagues.
Rationale
The AI Literacy for Teaching and Learning concentration positions MIT at the forefront of one of the most consequential transitions in modern education. Artificial intelligence is reshaping every dimension of teaching and learning, from curriculum design to student assessment to institutional administration. Education faces a critical gap in that educators are adopting AI tools faster than they are being prepared to use them wisely, effectively, or equitably. This program aims close that gap by preparing a new kind of educator who is fluent, grounded in best instructional practices, and equipped to lead AI integration.
Need/Market Analysis
The urgency for this program is backed by both market data and a widening professional development crisis on the ground. According to Resourcera (2026) 86% of students worldwide are already using AI tools for educational purposes, only 60% of U.S. teachers report doing the same, and of those, most are self-taught. The training that teachers have received is typically a one-off session, rather than ongoing professional development on AI (EdWeek Research Center, 2025).
At the leadership level, Microsoft's AI in Education Report (2025) found that AI fluency has become a baseline hiring requirement across industries, and upskilling employees in AI is now the top workforce strategy for 47% of leaders over the next 12 to 18 months. An MIT concentration in AI Literacy for Teaching and Learning would directly address the gap by producing educator-leaders who can train themselves, teach students, and build capacity in the institutions they serve.
