Cover Letter Guide for Future Teachers
Generalize the Letter
- Address the mentor teacher "Dear Mentor Teacher" or "Dear Administrator"
- Mention the specific discipline and/or grade level you're interested in.
Start with a Strong Opening
- Briefly introduce yourself (e.g., your university, major, and year).
- State your purpose: requesting a specific field experience placement.
- Address the specific requirements for the field experience.
Showcase Passion for Teaching
- Share why you're excited about working with students.
- Mention any relevant experiences (e.g., tutoring, camp counseling, volunteering, coaching).
Connect with the Mentor Teacher’s Needs
- Highlight how you can contribute to their classroom.
- Show awareness of their school’s values or teaching philosophy if known.
Closing
- End the cover letter professionally (e.g. Respectfully, Sincerely, Regards, etc.)
- Leave four spaces and then type your name.
- Include an electronic or written signature under your typed name.
Keep It Professional and Concise
- One page max.
- Use clear, confident language.
- Proofread carefully—no typos!
