New Information
- Teacher Education Admission Requirement Update (3/28/2024)
- MATH 101 Contemporary Mathematics is now recognized as an alternative course option to satisfy the MATH 110 College Algebra requirement for program admission.
- Teacher Education Admission Requirement Update (1/25/2024)
- National background check and negative TB verification are no longer required to be submitted as part of the Teacher Education Admission Application. Instead, candidates will be prompted to provide these verifications, via Sonia, before entering schools for their first field experience. The same recency requirements still apply. When these verifications are initially submitted, the result must be from within the last 6 months. Beyond that, the FHSU College of Education considers negative TB and background check verification to be valid for 4 years. Candidates are still able to use a valid and current Kansas teaching license to fulfill the National background check requirement.
- Student Teaching Admission Requirement Update (1/25/2024)
- Professional liability insurance verification is no longer required to be submitted as part of the Application for Student Teaching. Instead, candidates will be prompted to provide this verification, via Sonia, before entering schools for their first field experience. Sonia will keep track of the validity of submitted insurance verification and will alert candidates when it’s time for them to provide updated verification.
- What is Sonia? (1/25/2024)
- Sonia is a placement management software that the Office of Field Experiences now uses to coordinate field placements. Before the start of Early Field Experience (for Secondary majors) or after being admitted to the Teacher Education program (for all other majors), a Sonia account will be created for each candidate. Candidates will use their Sonia account to join placement groups that are associated with each field experience course they take. Once candidates join a placement group, required forms/applications and tasks (such as uploading verifications) will be issued to their account for completion.

Important Disclosures
- It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that candidates check with their state department of education and anticipated school site prior to participating in any internship or student teaching to determine any additional requirements that may be in place by that state. Failure to do so could result in needing to repeat that internship or student teaching.
- LICENSURE RECIPROCITY DISCLOSURE - The US Department of Education (Federal regulation Sec 668.43 A-C) requires FHSU to notify applicants who have an out-of-state address and are interested in or registered in degree programs that lead to state licensure or certification of individual state licensure requirements.
We are required to notify you if the program you are interested in or registered in will meet educational requirements to apply for certification or licensure in your home state.
If you are interested in getting licensed outside the state of Kansas, it's important that you read through THIS information. - Guide for Obtaining a Teaching License Outside of Kansas

Council On Preparation Of Teachers And School Personnel (COPTSP)
The Council on Preparation of Teachers and School Personnel (COPTSP) is the advisory policy committee for FHSU teacher education programs. It develops policies for teacher education programs and submits them to the appropriate administrative agency for review and subsequent approval. The Council approves admissions to the teacher education program and student teaching, reviews petitions requesting exceptions to policies and recommends criteria for teaching licenses. COPTSP membership consists of faculty from departments that have a state-approved teacher education program, students in an education major and ex-officio members. Meetings are held once a month, August through May.
