November 15-19
Each year, over 100,000 Americans actively participate in Geography Awareness Week. Established by Presidential proclamation over 30 years ago, this annual public awareness program organized by National Geographic Education Programs (NGEP) encourages citizens young and old to think and learn about the interconnectedness of our world.
This year we plan to explore
Geography Around Us
with events tied to the 5 themes of Geography.

Monday - World Awareness Trivia
10:00 am - 1:00 pm
FHSU Campus, Memorial Union

Test your world knowledge and awareness! Stop by our Geography Awareness table in the Union. Let us quiz you on your knowledge and see if you can win a sweet treat.
Tuesday - City Riddles
Test your world city imports/exports knowledge! Our city riddles activity will give you clues describing different cities around the globe. Use the clues provided to figure out what city we are looking for. When you think you have found all the cities email us a list or picture of your guesses.
We will announce the answers and the names of anyone who received a score of 100% at the end of the week.

Wednesday - GIS Day
Curious about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and want to know (or share) how the daily applications of GIS may be impacting you? GIS Day @GeoFHSU is part of a nationwide event to promote awareness of GIS and how we use this evolving tool to analyze the world.

Part of geography is the people around you, and the culture of the region. If you are in Hays we invite you to join the Geosciences Club Friendsgiving Potluck dinner. Get to know the people and cultural traditions in the department.

Friday - Challenge
AWE-SOME KANSAS
Entries Due: Nov. 19th
Help us locate some awe-inspiring natural features in Kansas. Identify an inspiring landscape, canyon, water feature, cave, natural arch, or anything naturally formed, and learn more about the geoscience behind it.
Then share its story in your own creative way - essay, artwork, photograph, song, video, ect. Provide your AWE-SOME KANSAS created story item to the Department of Geosciences no later than Nov. 19th to be displayed following Fall Break.
Shared creations can be delivered in person to Tomanek Hall 233 or emailed to geosciences@fhsu.edu. Notice: only finished quality and appropriate submissions will be put on display or shared on department digital media.
EARLY CAREER WEBINAR SERIES

- Tuesday, November 16, 3:00 – 4:15pm Eastern
Non-Academic Geography Career Paths for International Students in the U.S: This session will support non-academic career exploration and planning for international undergraduate and graduate students in the U.S., featuring panelists from government, private industry and the nonprofit sector who will share their insights followed by structured discussion and audience Q&A.
- Wednesday, November 17, 3:00 – 4:15pm Eastern
GISCI and GISP Certification – An Exploration of Professionalism Early in a Career or Profession : Individuals attending this workshop will receive information on the various facets of a professional career, especially from a geospatial perspective. Included will be a discussion of certification and professional credentials in general, and the GISP, specifically, and how this area can help an individual succeed early and throughout one's career. The session will focus on the importance of the GISP certification and why one should invest the time and resources in gaining certification. Existing GISPs who may have questions about renewing their certification are also encouraged to attend.
- Thursday, November 18, 3:00 – 4:15pm Eastern
Finding and Writing Grants to Fund your Geography Research : If you are on your way to earn a PhD in geography (or related) or if you recently graduated, you are likely making your first steps into applying for grants that can fund your work. This webinar will feature scientists that have experience in writing proposals and finding grants, whether from federal programs such as NSF and NIH, or from other sources such as non-profits and foundations. They will share stories about the experiences they had and about ways to communicate the geographic perspective of our work.

The Future is Here - Geographers Pursue the Path ForwardCheck out the ArcGIS Story Map produced by the American Association of Geographers for many other GAW celebrations around the world. Many included virtual events and special on-line presentations.
