Earth Science & Geography Awareness Weeks
Photography Contest
The FHSU Geosciences Department announces its ninth annual Earth Sciences Week photography contest and are pleased to announce the contest will run from Earth Science Week in October through Geography Awareness Week in November. Contest is open to anyone.
Contest Rules & Entry Information
Photos will be accepted for judging in the following categories: Ecology, Geology, Weather, Water, and our special categories "Earth as Inspiration" and "Migration".
Description of our Special Categories:
- The category of "Earth as Inspiration'' reflects this year's Earth Science Week theme. This category is open to your interpretation, please provide a detailed description of your interpretation when submitting your photograph.
- The category of "Migration" is this year's Geography Awareness Week theme selected by the Kansas Geographic Alliance. This category is open to your interpretation, please provide a detailed description of your interpretation when submitting your photograph.
Judging and prize awards will be in done in the following method
Photograph and Details
- 1/3 on the ability of the photograph to capture interest and illustrate the category concept
- 1/3 on the scientifically accurate description of the feature of the photograph
- 1/3 on the composition and aesthetics of the photograph
There is a limit of one entry per category per person (five photos total). All photos must be submitted digitally. Photos may be digital photographs or photographs that have been scanned. No photographs submitted in a previous contest may be submitted.
Guidelines for submitting digital images:
- Submitted images should be formatted to no more than 180 dpi, no larger than 800 by 650 pixels and no smaller than 300 by 225 pixels. Winners will be asked to provide high quality images for display purposes.
- Images should be submitted in JPG/JPEG (high quality) or TIFF format.
- File sizes must be less than 900 Kb per image.
- Minor digital correction is permitted, but images that have been significantly modified or appear unnatural will be disqualified. Modifications that will be permitted: cropping, rotation, resizing maintaining aspect ratio, red-eye removal, spot editing, and use of corrective functions such as contrast and brightness to improve the natural appearance. Winners may be asked to submit a copy of the original image for any image that appears to be modified.
- No borders, frames, watermarks, signatures, or copyright notices may be added to images. All winning images will be displayed with the photographer's name.
Submitted photographs must be accompanied by the following information:
- Full Name of Photographer (must be the submitter)
- Address of Photographer
- Telephone Number
- Email Address
- Submission Category
- Photograph Date
- Geographic Coordinates of the Photo Locations (Latitude and Longitude - as precise as possible)
- (hint you can find coordinates using a GPS unit, placemarking a site on Google, or manual maps)
- Description of the Photograph and how it illustrates or signifies the category concept.
- Please name your photograph according to the following guidelines "last name_category_descriptive text" (example: heinrichs_weather_tornados.jpg)
Photos may be submitted starting October 13th. The entry deadline is 12:00 midnight on Monday, November 26th.
Winners will be announced on the Geosciences Department Photocontest website www.fhsu.edu/geo/Events/Photocontest and Facebook page 'Geosciences at FHSU'
Prizes will be awarded for first place in every category and for the best overall photo.
