AAPG Mid-Continent Field Conference 2024
The Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway:
Depositional Environment and Paleontology
SPOUSES/GUESTS/CHILDREN
SATURDAY, OCT. 19
Departure Time: 8:45 am
Departure Location: FHSU Campus, Gross Memorial Coliseum Parking lot
While full conference participants are exploring the geology and associated science and economic impact of regions to the east and west of Hays, anyone registered as a Spouse/Guest for the conference will have the opportunity to participate in a special surprise day trip.
This trip will head south from Hays shortly after the conference field trip groups leave. We will be exploring some of the same general geology systems associated with the Western Interior Seaway during the Cretaceous period. Stops will include opportunities to explore: the geology and uses of the limestone known as 'post rock', cultural and other impacts on the region by early settlers, exploration of sustainable agricultural practices, and unique art. Additional stops on the trip will provide the opportunity to experience Kansas native plants and wildlife up close and visits to related museums.
Group transportation will be provided for this field trip. Lunch will be provided for all registered participants.
Details: The Spouse/Guest trip will depart shortly after the full conference field trips depart (around 8:45 am) and will return to Hays around 4:00 pm. This trip will include minor short distance hiking to geology sites, a farm tour with livestock, and the potential opportunity for a nature trail hike. Please plan accordingly by wearing close-toed shoes suitable for these types of activities and bringing sunscreen/bug spray to your preference.
