February 2026 Students of the Month
Kathie Chavez
Kathie Chavez is an on-campus student at Fort Hays State University. Kathie is originally from Colby, Kansas and transferred to FHSU in the fall of 2025. She is working towards her BSN in Nursing, a minor in psychology, and her leadership certificate. On campus she is very involved with the Social Work Club in addition to her classes. She chose to get involved with the leadership certificate to build her leadership skillset and learn applicable skills to her future profession. She shared, “My future profession involves advocating for those in need, aiding and serving the future lives to ensure they’re treated with respect and care. I never really saw myself as a leader and the leadership certificate sounded like a fantastic opportunity to improve that aspect.” Outside of school she loves to workout, read, bake, or be out in nature.
“I am currently taking my first two simultaneously, Introduction to Leadership Concepts as well as Behaviors and I greatly enjoy them both, I couldn’t say either one is my favorite, they both are! The work we’ve completed so far is very meaningful and introspective and it makes things very interesting when you are provided with the opportunity to step back and see what colors make up the picture of your life. The professors' willingness to facilitate students’ learning, create space for students to apply themselves, and encourage and utilize authenticity are vital to why both classes are so wonderful.”
Congratulations, Kathie!

Tina Bailey is an online student here at Fort Hays State University from Winfield, Kansas. Tina is currently a junior majoring in Organizational Leadership. She chose this route to grow as a person while learning practical ways to show for people in real, everyday situations. Tina strives to understand people better and support them throughout their daily lives. She states, “Studying leadership helps me communicate with honesty, handle challenges while staying true to my values, and connect with others”. The leadership programs have allowed her to further her background in bringing people together, supporting them, and making an impact. Outside of school Tina enjoys family history, spending time with her family, and working on fun creative/craft projects.
“My favorite leadership class so far is Field Work In Leadership Studies. Which I’m currently taking. I’m enjoying it because it gives me the chance to take what I’ve been learning and apply it in real situations with real people. Instead of only discussing leadership concepts, I get to practice them through listening, collaborating, and supporting others. The hands-on experience is helping me understand better as a leader and build confidence in how I support and work alongside others.”
Congratulations, Tina!
