Auditions & Scholarships
Music Scholarships
Music Scholarships are available to music majors, music minors, and non-majors. Scholarships are renewable based upon musical and academic performance. Music scholarships are awarded in addition to academic scholarships offered by Fort Hays State University.
Spring 2027 Audition Dates (for entrance Fall 2027)
- Saturday, March 7, 2027
- Thursday, April 1, 2027
- Alternate date: Saturday, April 3, 2027 (no voice auditions will be held this day)
How to Apply for Music Scholarships
- Apply for Admission to the university.
- Sign up for an audition. You will be contacted to confirm the date and arrange a time.
- Audition for a scholarship. If one of the audition dates does not work, an individual or online audition can be arranged. In-person auditions for music majors are strongly recommended.
- Students will be notified by May 1st regarding music scholarships.
- Music scholarships will be awarded only when a student is fully admitted to FHSU.
- New for 2026/2027! Non-major string players can also apply for additional scholarship awards from the Hays Symphony Guild. There are a limited numbers of awards available.
Audition Requirements
- A two-octave major scale
- A piece you have prepared for contest
- Sight reading
- Snare drum solo/etude
- Marimba or Xylophone solo/etude
- Sight Reading
- Two contrasting selections from standard classical piano repertoire (memory recommended but not required)
- Sight reading
- General Musicianship questions - key signatures, scales, cadences, etc.
- Two octave scales and arpeggios - major and minor
- Two contrasting selections that display your best playing
- Two contrasting pieces. An accompanist is provided, so please bring an extra copy of the music
- Sight singing. You can sing on lah, loo, or any sight-singing system you have used
- Repeat four and five note melodic patterns that will be given to you on piano, sung on lah
- A two-octave major scale
- A piece you have prepared for contest
- Sight reading
Music Scholarship FAQs
Music scholarships are available to all university students, regardless of major.
All music scholarships are awarded on the basis of a competitive audition, student potential for growth, and the needs of the program.
Student must maintain a good GPA, register in lessons, and register in an ensemble.
