The Master of Science in Education (Elementary Education) program at Fort Hays State University provides a streamlined pathway for licensed educators to add a Kansas Elementary Education (PreK–6) endorsement to an existing teaching license. Through one year of graduate coursework, educators licensed in another teaching area, including Early Childhood Education, Secondary Education, or Special Education, can earn both a Kansas Elementary Education (PreK–6) endorsement and a Master of Science in Education degree. Students also have an opportunity to complete an additional summer semester to earn a PreK–12 High Incidence Special Education provisional endorsement. The program offers summer, fall, and spring start dates.
Delivered in a flexible online format, the program combines graduate coursework with practical preparation for elementary teaching. Students complete a practicum experience in an approved elementary classroom, applying coursework in a real-world setting while gaining valuable feedback from mentor educators. This practical experience helps students develop instructional expertise and expand career opportunities in elementary education.

TEEL 860: Advanced Classroom Management
This course prepares students to develop effective classroom management and instructional practices. Students learn strategies that promote engagement, encourage positive student behavior, and support a productive learning environment.
TEEL 837: Curriculum, Integration in the Elementary Grades for Holistic Learning
This course explores interdisciplinary approaches to teaching social studies, the arts, and physical education in elementary settings. Students learn to design integrated lessons that promote critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration while supporting learners' physical, cognitive, and emotional development.
TEEL 859: Advanced Diverse and Exceptional Learners

Admission to the Master of Science in Education (Elementary Education) program is intended for educators who currently hold a teaching license in an area other than elementary education and wish to add a Kansas Elementary Education (PreK–6) endorsement through graduate study. Applicants must meet both Graduate School requirements and program-specific admission criteria established by the Department of Teacher Education. Admission decisions are based on undergraduate academic performance and evidence of readiness for graduate-level coursework and teacher licensure. Applicants must meet the following requirements for admission consideration:

- Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75
- A grade of B or higher in English Composition II and Speech/Oral Communication
- A grade of C or higher in a college-level mathematics course
- Two letters of recommendation
- A minimum 250-word professional statement
- Completed Admission Criteria Acknowledgment form
- Completed Program Expectations form
Previous graduate coursework and degrees are not considered during the admission review process. Applicants previously placed on FHSU Teacher Education probation or who received a disposition violation are not eligible for admission. Students previously dismissed from the MSE Elementary or MSE Secondary programs must wait 12 months before reapplying, and readmission is not guaranteed.
Additional Admission Requirements
During the TEEL 870 Mentoring Seminar, students must provide:
- Verification of a national background check
- Verification of a negative tuberculosis (TB) test
- Proof of professional liability insurance
Application Process
Applications are submitted through the FHSU Graduate School. To ensure timely admission and registration, all application materials should be submitted and processed in Workday at least two weeks before the semester's intended start date. The program does not have a formal application deadline.
