Unoccupied Aircraft Systems
sUAS Commercial Applications
Participates will experience supervisor-led content exploration of rights and responsibilities of operating prosumer grade sUAS platforms in the National Airspace; developing flight plans, protocols, and piloting skills with specific sUAS platforms and sensors; development of products that enhance the efficiency, creativity, or unique quantitative value of projects using sUAS technologies specific to the academic discipline or profession. With aid of the instructor, the participant will earn a Remote Pilot Certificate with a sUAS rating; document piloting skills and develop a project that produces a product obtained from data collected by the participant’s sUAS flights. Participants will be encouraged to gather sUAS data in their area of professional interest. Participants will present their work for review in a form appropriate to the discipline, e.g., document, presentation, commercial posting, etc. Much of this work can be done remotely but participates must demonstrate the capture of data using a sUAS, document the analytical use of software used to manipulate the data, and they must produce a final product. Currently, FHSU supports a number of software packages e.g. Pix4D, Field Agent: Sentera, Lichi etc. that are available for participant use.
Unoccupied Aircraft Systems: Remote Pilot Prep
Participants will experience supervisor-led content exploration of the materials that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires of all pilots operating in the National Airspace. The primary topic areas include: legal responsibilities and limitations; weather conditions; recognition of airspace limits; radio communication; physics of flight; Aeronautical Decision Making; and Crew Resource Management as these affect safe flight in the National Airspace. Content will be available online and through Remote Pilot Test Prep, from Aviation Supplies & Academics Inc.. Participants must attend at least 4 hrs. of in-person supervised preparation and must earn an 85% on a pretest formatted after the FAA certification exam.
Unoccupied Aircraft Systems: Piloting and Planning
Participants will experience supervisor-led content exploration that describes the specific sUAS platform, assembly, safety protocols, and flight control system that they will operate. This portion can be in person or online. Participates must pass a short assessment to move on to practical flight control. Students will document 4 hrs. of supervised flight time with the same sUAS platform and flight control system. Students will demonstrate competence through a culminating experience in the form of a final practical / oral examination conducted as they pilot automated and directed flight plans. Students must possess a Remote Pilot Certificate with a sUAS rating to participate or earn this badge.
Unoccupied Aircraft Systems: Data Products
Participants will experience supervisor-led content exploration of flight planning, sensor choice, and data capture, e.g., images, video, etc. With aid of the instructor, the participant will develop a project idea that includes a finished product obtained from sUAS flights. Participants will be encouraged to focus on their area of professional interest. Participants will present their work for review in a form appropriate to the discipline, e.g., document, presentation, commercial posting, etc. Much of this work can be done remotely but participants must demonstrate the capture of data using a sUAS and document the analytical use of the software used to manipulate the data. The project is a culminating experience in the Commercial sUAS Applications - Comprehensive Badge. Currently, FHSU supports a number of software packages e.g. Pix4D, Field Agent: Sentera, Lichi etc. that are available for participant use. Students must possess a Remote Pilot Certificate with a sUAS rating to participate or earn this badge.
