Strategic Plan
This Strategic Plan provides a clear view of where we are headed and how we intend to get there. Organized into short-range, medium-range, and long-term goals, it outlines the priorities that will guide our work, inform our decisions, and help us achieve sustained success while remaining focused on our mission and values.
Short Range Goals (1 Year)
Strategic Planning: Develop, communicate, and begin advancing a Civic Learning and Engagement strategic plan.
Definition of Community Engagement: Provide definitions, descriptions, and examples of community engagement to stakeholders to increase understanding and alignment.
Coordinating Entity: Facilitate engagement across stakeholder groups (faculty/staff, students, community partners) through the launch of the newly re-envisioned Campus Community Collaborative (3C) and leverage their participation to guide civic learning and engagement efforts.
Civic Learning and Engagement as a Shared Practice: Co-create ways that embeds civic learning and engagement as a shared practice with other university offices such as student engagement, student success, career development, teaching innovation, and academic learning.
Evaluation & Assessment: Develop an integrated plan for assessment and evaluation of civic learning and engagement and develop initial tools and procedures for implementation.
Medium Range Goals (2-3 Years)
- Strengthen the philosophy and mission of community engagement.
- Design and implement faculty/staff support for and involvement in community engagement.
- Collaborate to develop student support for and involvement in community engagement.
- Enhance community participation and partnerships.
- Build institutional support for community engagement.
These medium range goals are aligned with the Assessment Rubric for Institutionalizing Community Engagement in Higher Education, a tool CLE utilizes to guide strategic action toward our long range goals. CLE's short range goals target specific components of this rubric.
Long Range Goals (4-6 Years)
Community Co-Creation & Public Impact: FHSU co-creates reciprocal collaborations with local, regional, and international communities that yield measurable outcomes addressing public challenges.
Student Learning & Development: FHSU provides a variety of immersive transformational experiences, both curricular and co-curricular, that support students in becoming engaged global citizen leaders.
Faculty/Staff Cultivation & Alignment: FHSU aligns its university policies, infrastructure, and recognition systems to explicitly develop, incentivize, and support high-quality civic learning and engagement through teaching, research, and service activities.
Institutional Excellence & Continuous Improvement: FHSU utilizes rigorous, ongoing institutional assessment to drive continuous improvement, securing and retaining premier national benchmarks—including HLC accreditation and Carnegie Elective Classifications (Leadership for Public Purpose and Community Engagement).
