Heart of a Tiger: From high plains to high seas: FHSU students embrace global citizenship
by Derek Oum | January 21st 2026
Two Fort Hays State University students, Mallory Palmer and Tayton Roberts, took part in a unique study-abroad program called Semester at Sea. Instead of attending classes on campus, students live on a ship that travels around the world, turning different countries into learning spaces. Mallory has already completed the program, while Tayton is preparing to begin her journey.
Both students became interested in Semester at Sea years earlier after seeing it on social media. They were drawn to the chance to visit many countries in one semester while still earning college credit. The voyage begins in Thailand and travels through parts of Asia, Africa, and Europe. While on the ship, students take a full course load, including a global studies class, and the credits transfer back to FHSU.
The program focuses on more than academics. Students are taught how to travel safely and respectfully, and they learn to adapt to new cultures and situations. Mallory says being flexible and open to unexpected experiences was the most valuable lesson. Tayton believes the trip will help her future career by giving her a broader understanding of the world.
