Fourteenth Annual Regional Science & Engineering Fair hosted and sponsored by Science and Mathematics Education Institute, Fort Hays State University
The Fourteenth Annual FHSU Regional Science & Engineering Event will be held at Fort Hays State University Ballroom and Black and Gold Room on February 26, 2022.
Students grades 4-12 are eligible to enter, with awards given for top entries in each category.
Winning entries will automatically qualify for the Kansas State Science & Engineering Fair. Individual projects may be entered, as well as team entries (comprised of no more than 3 students). Each individual will need to mail $10 payment after submitting the online form. If you are part of a group project each individual will need to mail a payment of $10 each.

- Before you begin your research, please take a few minutes to look at the rule book
- Reading it BEFORE you start your research will save you much time and frustration
- Students will NOT have access to electricity at the facility
- We are required to follow all ISEF regulations, which includes NO live animals, bacteria, etc. may be displayed (See ISEF rule booklet)
- All category descriptions can be found here
- ALL projects are required to have form 1, 1A, 1B, and an abstract
- IF THE PROJECT REQUIRES SPECIAL FORMS:
- Prior approval must be obtained through SMEI Scientific Review Committee (SRC) BEFORE you start experimenting!!!

- Every 4-8 grade student should have these forms in their binder behind their report:
- Adult Sponsor Form
- Approval Form 1B
- Abstract
- Every 9-12 grade student should have these forms in their binder behind their report:
- Adult Sponsor Form 1
- Student Checklist Form 1A/Research Plan
- Approval Form 1B
- Abstract
- All projects must have the corresponding special forms if the project required SRC approval before beginning. Those conditions include but are not limited to:
- Human Participants are used in experimentations
- Animals are used in experimentation
- Microorganisms, rDNA, fresh/frozen tissue, blood, body fluids are present in the experiment
- Hazardous chemicals, activities, or devices are used in experimentation
- A supervisor is required for the experiment - is this person the designated supervisor or a qualified scientist?
- A laboratory setting is needed for the experiment
- If this project is a continuation of an earlier project
Items that are not allowed to be displayed in any form:
- Living organisms including plants
- Soil, sand, rock, cement and/or waste sample (even if encased in a slab of acrylic)
- Taxidermy specimen or parts
- Preserved vertebrate or invertebrate animals
- Human or animal food
- Plant material (living, dead, or preserved) that are in their raw, unprocessed, or non-manufactured state (Exception: manufactured construction materials used in building the project or display)
- All chemicals including water (Projects may not use water in any form or demonstration)
- All hazardous substances or devices (Example: poisons, drugs, firearms, weapons, ammunition, reloading devices, and lasers)
- Items that may have contained or been in contact with hazardous chemicals (Exception: Item may be permitted if professionally cleaned and documented and document for cleaning is available)
- 3-D Printers
- Dry ice or other sublimating solids
- Sharp items (Examples: syringes, needles, pipettes, knives)
- Flames or highly flammable materials (including magnified light sources). A Fresnel Lens cannot be used in conjunction with a light source - it becomes an open flame
- Glass or glass objects unless deemed by the Display and Safety Committee to be an integral and necessary part of the project (Example: glass that is an integral part of a commercial product such as a computer screen)
- Batteries with open-top cells or wet cells
- Any apparatus deemed unsafe by the Scientific Review Committee (SRC), the Display and Safety Committee, or KSSEF
- Apparatuses that produce extreme temperatures
- Apparatuses that have unshielded belts, pulleys, chains, or moving parts
**Project sounds, lights, odors, or other display items may not be distracting
*Projects can be continued under the table BUT this area is not to be used for storage
