Put Your Artistic Talent into Action
In Art and Design Programs, follow the path of serious artists from day one, which means you learn by doing, rather than simply by lecture or observation. Although the options are almost too numerous to mention, learn more about a few ways that you can roll up your sleeves and put your artistic talent, whatever it may be, into practice.
Hone Your Craft in the Lab or Studio
As an undergraduate, enjoy full access to equipment and studios/labs, including nights and weekends, which gives you the time and space you need to complete assignments and develop your skills as an artist. You'll discover that art majors develop close relationships with one another, becoming like family - and a lot of that happens in the after hours spent in the lab or studio!
Display Your Work Locally and Nationally
A network of Hays venues gives you the opportunity to display your work in the community and benefit from first-hand experience within the field. Graduate as well as undergraduate artists are able to participate in local art walks, exhibitions and specialized area shows.
Intensive Professional Development Opportunities
As a student, get involved in statewide and national organizations such as the National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), the Kansas Artist Craftsmen Association (KACA) and the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), the professional association for design. Our students have won many awards within each of those organizations.
Also, throughout your program, be mentored professionally right alongside your creative/conceptual development, such as how to market your work through exhibitions, web sites and blogs and how to market yourself through resume writing. Gain the pragmatic skills you need to make an artistic life...rather than just graduate with an art or design degree.
Find an Internship
Let us help you build your career package with the experience of an internship or practicum before entering the work force full time. With a solid network in the field and the tools necessary for effective communication, you can spend time experiencing your major! Work in a field related to your major, receive college credit and gain hands-on experience at the same time.
Benefit from Visiting Artists
From nationally recognized artist in ceramics, glass, iron and everything in between, take advantage of the regular lectures and demonstrations offered by emerging and prominent artists. These opportunities give you the chance to network and gain valuable insights into the profession.
Travel the Country or the World
As a student, travel to conferences and artist events in order to stay abreast of the latest trends in contemporary art. Sculptors travel to participate in iron pours at some of the most notable foundries in the nation. Through the Andrea Powers Fellowship, you have the opportunity to travel internationally to experience the art world. Or, consider a summer, semester or year-long study abroad opportunity.
