Although living in Missouri for two-thirds of her life, Shannon Hall said she still feels like a Kansan. So Friday night, the 78-year-old native of Colby followed her normal routine the evening before a football game in this town of 11,000, about 30 miles northeast of metropolitan Kansas City. After supper, Hall drove to Tiger Stadium and placed a cone at the south end zone to reserve a spot for her car for Saturday's game. Hall -- known around these parts as Grandma Shannon -- is the No. 1 fan of the Excelsior Springs high school Tiger team and said she loves all sports. She has been cheering on Tiger teams for more than 50 years, so imagine her excitement when she learned the Fort Hays State University Tigers would be playing in the 2015 Mineral Water Bowl. Fort Hays State, 8-3, will take on the University of Minnesota-Duluth, 8-3, in a noon kickoff.

A lot of folks look up to Isaiah Maxi, and it's not just because he stands 6 feet, 5 inches tall. An outgoing person who stands up for what he believes in, Maxi can talk to just about anyone. Five mornings a week, bright and early at 7:30, Maxi bends his lanky 190-pound frame into a chair more suited for 3- and 4-year-olds. For a couple of hours, the handsome 21-year-old who sported a different hairdo at least six times this season -- and who friends simply call Maxi -- answers to "Mr. Maxi" to two dozen youngsters. Later in the day, Maxi is just as comfortable injecting his teammates on the Tiger football team with positive maxims.

If Shawn Behr could give players on this year's Fort Hays State University football team a piece of advice, it would be to enjoy this time heading into their season finale. The 2015 FHSU football team qualified for post-season action for the first time in 20 years with its 8-3 record, and the Tigers were invited to represent the MIAA in the Mineral Water Bowl Dec. 5 in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Behr, a native of Great Bend, was the starting quarterback on the last Tiger team to make it to post-season play, in 1995. He has been paying particular attention to Fort Hays State the past five years as the Tigers consistently improved under Head Coach Chris Brown.

Closer to home, Lisa Karlin is even more familiar with FHSU's VIP Student Ambassadors. Karlin, assistant to the president and director of marketing, was a student ambassador at Fort Hays State in the 1990s. Students go through an application and interview process before they are chosen for the current ambassador program, begun in the late 1980s. Those chosen are responsible for working at official university functions.

he new Honors College at Fort Hays State University will begin its first year in the fall with a class of 31 students, 17 of them incoming freshmen plus one transfer student and a current student joining the honors program. They will join 12 students converting from the Distinguished Scholars Program, which the Honors College replaces. The idea in both is to provide a challenging curriculum across the range of programs for academically gifted and ambitious students.

In an effort to support study abroad programs, the Department of Political Science at Fort Hays State University announced that it will provide U.S. passports for Political Science majors to study abroad.

Organizers of TEDxFHSU have received confirmation that a local version of the popular TED conference will be offered on Friday, April 24, on the campus of Fort Hays State University. The independently produced event, operated under license from TED, is set for 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Eagle Communications Hall at the Robbins Center on the FHSU campus.

Continuing the tradition of telling great American stories, the Montana Repertory Theatre returns to the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center with the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic, The Great Gatsby, as a part of the 2014-2015 Encore Series. The performance is set for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
